training to become a scuba diving instructor (OWSI) (PADI)
(See Divemaster training below)
First a correction: I wrote at the very beginning of my divemaster training (see below): "As a divemaster, you must theoretically have the same knowledge as a diving instructor minus the didactic basics" - this is correct insofar as diving, diving theory, people, equipment, etc. acts. As a diving instructor (at least in the PADI system) you also have to "learn" exactly this system - ie it goes much more into the rules, regulations, framework conditions and legal aspects than with the divemaster. What does it mean if I'm not employed by PADI and I'm not a PADI representative, but can use the license & copyright rights as a "non-agent"? (Insurance!) And there is a second important difference:
To become a diving instructor you first have to attend the IDC (Instructor Development Course) which lasts at least 8 days. This is followed by the IE (Instructor Examination), normally by a representative from the local PADI office and a 2nd auditor. These individuals must have at least the rank of CD (Course Director) but may not work as such in the area. In the IDC, 15 Knowledge Reviews (KR) and 9 Diving Knowledge (DK) question blocks must be completed, each with a 100% success rate. In addition, there are 3 extra parts (ET) for the electronic administration of (diving) students...
The KRs are:
Dive theory | the PADI System - introduction | Learning, Teaching and the PADI System |
Discover Scuba Diving and Experience Programme | PADI Open Water Diver Course | Riskmanagement and legal issues |
manage risks | PADI QM and license rights | introduction in teaching |
Knowledge development - implementation and assessment | Confined Water Training | Open Water Training |
further education and Leadership-Programs | Diving as a Business | teaching the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) |
The DK are assigned to 7 topics plus a final test (consisting of 2 parts)
Phzsics | Physiologie | Equipment |
Skills and Environment | The Recreational Dive Planner | Study recommendations for the theory test in IE |
refresher questions for the RDP |
The ET are:
assigning Codes | Student management | PIC-Process |
Codes are required when a student/participant purchases an eLearning course. e-learning means that the theory can be worked out in self-study (including videos, repetition questions and tests)
PIC...positive identification confirmation; the confirmation that a student / participant actually meets all the requirements to be certified according to the PADI standard.
My IDC starts on September 5th and will last 12 days. In addition, 2 days of preparation and another 2 days for the training to become an EFR Instructor (Emergency First Care - trainer for emergency workers), that will be a very intensive time!
NEW: Here is a list of the process:
IDC preperation | ||
---|---|---|
day 1 | 24 Water-Skills / Part 1 (s. DM Training, "Skills") | 24 Water-Skills / Part 2 |
day 2 | IDC orientation session Theory (Check) - Part 1 | Theory (Check) - Part 2 |
EFR Instructor + IDC | ||
---|---|---|
day 1 | EFR Introduction EFR Course | EFR Kurs (+ Vorbereitung Lehrprobe) |
day 2 | EFR Course (+ teaching, part 1) | EFR Course (+ teaching, part 2) EFR exam |
day 3 | Start IDC: 24 Water Skills - Workshop ("WS") | Teaching & training-WS / Sales-WS Theory-presentation-WS |
day 4 | PADI-System - WS / Theory 1-WS Exams for both topics | Theory-presentation 1 Pooltraining-WS |
day 5 | Pool-presentation, part 1 Rescue-WS, part 1 | Open Water-WS / OW-presentation (dryrun) / "difficult" skills CESA, Navigation, Knots, .. |
day 6 | Pool-presentation, part 2 DSD-WS (Pool) | OWD-course - WS Risk management & license rights |
day 7 | DSD-WS + registering | rescue-WS, part 2 |
day 8 | OW-presentation, part 1 | continued education-WS Theory-presentation, part 2 |
day 9 | OW=presentation, part 2 | DSD OW-WS AOWD-WS (in a Cenote ) |
day 10 | Pool-presentation, part 3 400m swim, 10m float | exams preperation theory #1 |
day 11 | exams preperation theorz #2 | - |
day 12 | Standards + mock exam #1 - 2 hours | Simulation Pool training + 5 Water Skills + theorz presentation |
day 13 | Simulation OW training #1 / rescue exercise | Simulation OW training #2 / rescue exercise |
My IE ("Instructor Examination") took place from September 22nd to 25th. At least one theory lesson, 2 lessons in the pool and 2 (or 3?) lessons in open water must be carried out and a test on the theory part (physics, physiology, equipment, diving skills, dive planning and rules and standards) must be passed.
This is followed by the training for specialty diving courses (such as deep diving, night diving, drift diving and others), but this will again be a separate section.
Divemaster training (PADI)
As a divemaster, you must theoretically have the same knowledge as a diving instructor minus the didactic basics, which means: knowing everything but not teaching for the first time.
You also have to prove your physical fitness with the following 5 exercises:
target | 5/4/3/2/1/0 points (at least 15 points in total, at least 1 point per exercise) \ my result |
---|---|
400m swim (without fins) | below 6:30/8:40/11:00/13:00/Rest/Ababort \ 10:57 (3 points) |
15 Minutes floating, last 2 minutes hands out of water | successfull/-/hands not out of water/-/touch wall or bottom not moe than 2 times\ no issues (5 points) |
800m swim with fins, mask, and snorkel | below 14:00/16:30/18:30/21:00/Rest/Abort\ 18:28 (3 points) |
tow a ddressed up diver 100m | below 2:10/3:15/4:20/5:30/Rest Abbruch \ 3:20 (3 points) |
Stresstest (change scuba unit underwater) | executed easily/small problems/problems/break surface maximal once/Abort od break the surface multiple times\ (3 points) |
Furthermore, a rescue of a diver must be simulated, 5 scenarios must be worked out (set up and manage the dive site, map the dive site, carry out a dive briefing, carry out a search & recovery exercise and carry out a deep dive), carry out all 5 programs that a divemaster is allowed to do alone (ReActivate , Skin Diver Course, DSD - discover scuba diving, additional DSD dives and DLD - discover local diving). And last but not least, accompany all levels of a diver (Open Water Diver in pool, OWD in open water, advanced training and accompany certified divers).
For each of these tasks there is an evaluation similar to the table above...
And of course you still have to pass 9 different "Knowledge Reviews" and a test (consisting of 2 parts) - I already have that!
Oh, demonstrate all 24 teaching quality skills ("Dive Skills)": 5 points: Correct, slow, clear movements, obviously easy; 4: correct, slow enough to emphasize key points; 3: correct but too fast; 2: not shown correctly; 1: Ability not demonstrated
assemble equipment | Buddy check | Entry into deep water | Weight control on the surface |
Change from snorkel to regulator | 5 points descent | recover regulator | Remove mask and blow out |
"no air" and alternative air supply | Ascending with alternative air supply | breathe from free-flow regulator | neutral buoyancy |
5 points ascent | CESA (3) | Inflate the jacket with your mouth, hover for 60 seconds | swim without a mask |
Putting on/off weights under water | Take off/put on diving equipment under water | Take off / put on diving equipment on the surface | Put weight on/off the surface |
dive headfirst | Detach the inflator hose | fasten loose cylinder band | emergency weight drop |
1 skill with 3 points (I was too fast on emergency ascent), 7 with 4 points, the rest with 5 points; 111 points in total!
